Biography

Leoluca lo Cascio is a Corleone native resident, the son of Nunzio lo Cascio and Orsola Gerardi. Based on his reported age in the 1794 stato delle anime, Leoluca is only twelve when he marries. I estimate he is born around 1767, twenty years before he marries.

Leoluca marries Bernarda di Frisco on 24 October 1787.

Leoluca and Bernarda have at least five children: Carmela (1788), Giovanni (1790), Vita (1791), Rosario (c. 1794), and Leoluchina (1795).

Carmela Maria is born 12 July 1788 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Giuseppe Cinquemani, husband of Francesca, and Francesca Paola Gennaro, who is unmarried.[1]

Carmela dies on 10 December 1788.[2] She is five months old.

Giovanni is born and baptized 14 January 1790, named after his maternal grandfather. His godparents are Rocco Cinquemani and Anna Mangiameli, who are both unmarried.[3]

Vita is born and baptized 4 May 1791. Her godparents are Maestro Francesco Zangara and Giuseppa Zangara, wife of Maestro Michaele.[4]

Rosario is born around 1794, based on his age in the 1807 census.

In the 1794 stato delle anime, Nunzio lo Cascio, 62 (b. 1732), his wife Orsola, 55 (b. 1739), and children Teodoro, 26 (b. 1768), Leoluca, 19 (b. 1775), and Providenza, 14 (b. 1780), live near the Corto di Marullo in Corleone. However, all three of these children, and two others not reported, have married by this time. Like Leoluca, his brother and sister are also probably older than reported, given their dates of marriage.

Leoluchina is born and baptized 16 August 1795. She is the daughter of the late Leoluca Cascio and Bernarda Frisco. Her godparents are Francesco Cario and Biagia Maria Pomara, widow of Giovanni.

Vita is reportedly 13 years old in 1807, and Rosario is eleven (b. 1796). Their sister Bernarda's baptismal record has been found and indicates Leoluca has died by this time. Based on this, I have estimated Vita and Rosario are each two years older than reported.

In the 1807 stato delle anime, Bernarda is living with their children above Favaloro's garden. This is probably the same location: in an earlier census, Favaloro's garden is called Marullo's. Bernarda has not yet remarried (she will in August).

Rosario marries Antonina di Leo, a widow, on 26 November 1834. Bernarda is still living.

Rosario dies, reportedly at age 60 (he is probably closer to 63) on 15 February 1859. He is survived by his wife. Bernarda has died by this time.
